The WCC Board of Trustees has approved 2,210 awards for graduation. They represent WCC graduates for December 2012 and candidates for April, June, and August 2013. The final number of degrees and certificates is expected to increase after the Spring/Summer Semester is completed in August.
“Education is such an important and integral part of our lives today. Washtenaw Community College is honored to provide the kind of quality instruction our students must have to be successful in their chosen careers,” said Dr. Rose B. Bellanca, WCC president.
The list of students represents 1,338 associate degree candidates and 872 certificate candidates. Of that number, 59.3 percent are women and 40.7 percent are men. Forty-one percent will graduate with honors.
The youngest WCC graduate is 16 and will receive an associate degree in broadcast arts with a 4.0 GPA. The oldest degree candidate is 67 and will receive an associate degree in music production/engineering. The oldest certificate graduate is 72 and will receive an advanced certificate in motorcycle service technology.
This year’s student speaker, Meaghan Cox, will expand on her WCC studies at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design in Winter 2014. She said that WCC gave her the motivation she needed to find the career she was meant to have.
“I wasn’t a good student (in high school), but WCC lit a fire under me. It got me going, it got me focused,” said Cox. “Originally, my major was 3D animation. But when I took my prerequisite class in Adobe Illustrator something clicked. I just knew that graphic design was what I was meant to be doing. My WCC associate degree is a great leg to stand on.”
Cox and the rest of her graduating class will be honored at the WCC Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 18, at 9:15am at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center.
