WCC is offering a variety of day camps this summer for area youth ages 6 to 18.
“WCC is committed to improving the quality of life for Washtenaw County residents. Programs like this are an example of how faculty and staff are building a learning community for area youth,” said Dr. Rose B. Bellanca, WCC president.
Registration for the following programs is currently underway:
• College for Kids focuses on creative expression that includes art, drama, music, and personal enrichment. Students will learn and play a variety of theater games, write stories and poems, improve speaking performance skills, and develop self-confidence and poise. Dates, times, and fees vary.
• Just for Teens challenges students to expand their knowledge and skills in areas such as drama, art, literature, and ACT prep. Dates, times, and fees vary.
• Pre-College STEM Initiative is an intensive two-week program to promote the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields and help college-bound students whose math and writing skills are below college level. Students will receive reading and writing instruction and tutoring tailored to their current skill levels each morning. Students will also meet with a faculty member in their STEM area of interest to work on a special project focused on lab development. The program is designed for students entering 10th to 12th grade in the fall semester. The cost of the Pre-College STEM program is $50 per student. The program runs from July 15 to 26.
• Camp Invention is packed with hands-on activities, brainstorming, experimentation, and action. The CREATE Program, which is featured in this camp, immerses elementary aged students in exciting, hands-on learning disguised as fun. For example, students are introduced to environmental science and the concept of conservation when they are challenged to rebuild a cleaner, more eco-friendly city that has been polluted to the point of ruin in the Saving Sludge City module. In the I Can Invent: Launchitude module, teams put physics (trajectory and velocity) into practical use as they take apart broken appliances and re-engineer the gears and gadgets. The session runs from July 22 through 26, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The fee is $235.
• Career Academy is a program for high school students to explore dynamic 21st century career paths. This program is ideal for students who are interested in construction, manufacturing, auto, and technology fields. Participants will explore academic tracks and career training available at WCC through interactive learning experiences, hands-on activities, and multimedia presentations. Career Academy participants will critically examine their career interests, meet with WCC faculty and students, gain an appreciation for the range of career specialties taught at WCC, and learn about areas of high employment opportunities. The Career Academy runs from June 17 through June 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students who have completed grades 9-11 are eligible to attend. Tuition for the Career Academy is $99. Space is limited.
