On The Record
Washtenaw Community College’s third Free College Day on March 28 bustled with excitement. More than 300 community members attended, enthusiastic to learn as much as possible from the WCC faculty and staff who were thrilled to share their knowledge.
Free College Day provides free lectures, demonstrations and learning. WCC credit and Community Enrichment instructors led 90-minute sessions on a wide variety of topics including physics, woodcarving, dance, photography, aviation and watercolor painting.
“Free College Day is very much about giving back, and that’s what this college was founded on,” said Andrew Anders, who taught a session on the Japanese spiritual system of reiki. “A community college is for the community, and this event is great way to show that philosophy.” Chris Carroll, who has attended previous Free College Day events, gave a thumbs-up to the lecture on preparing herbs. “I could have stayed in the session another hour!” she said. “And the demonstrations are always really fun, too.”
“We are so pleased with the success of Free College Day,” said WCC President Dr. Rose B. Bellanca. “At each event, hundreds of community members enjoy the diverse learning opportunities offered by our excellent, experienced faculty and staff. We love opening our doors to the community and letting them know we are an incredible resource here to help them develop their skills and talents and also explore their hobbies.”
The next Free College Day is scheduled for September 26 Registration details will be available in early September.
